Several years ago, I had friends who were writing for a small publisher’s imprint — AWOCBooks.com/Devoted Books. Devoted to Truck Driving, Devoted to Quilting, Devoted to Cooking, just to name a few.
I decided I wanted to write one too. Mine would be Devoted to Creating. Some people argued that since I don’t paint, I couldn’t write a book about creating/creativity. They didn’t share the same broadness of the definition that I do.
In 2008, Devoted to Creating: Igniting the Creative Spark in Everyone made its debut. Several years after that, the publisher retired and it went out of print. I had requested the rights revert back to me, so they did. I won’t go into why or how it took me so long to re-release it, but here we are!
Devoted to Creating: Igniting the Creative Spark in Everyone is available on Amazon. The Kindle edition is $4.99 regular price. It will be free Friday, November 23, through Tuesday, November 28.
The print edition is available for $11.99.
Welcome to Day 2 of 5 Days to Get Out of a Creative Rut!
Yesterday, you made your Idea Pocket. Today, you’re going to fill it.
Unless you’ve used a box or a big envelop, you want to keep your items small. Some suggestions of things to include in your Idea Pocket are:
- Ticket stubs.
- Tea bag tags.
- Price tags.
The list could go on, but you get the idea.
Ha. Idea. Idea Pocket. That wasn’t intentional, but after I noticed it, I wasn’t going to take it out.
I suggest that you put at least 10 items in your Idea Pocket. Share what you put in yours with us on Facebook or Instagram. Don’t forget the hashtag #nocreativerut.

Yesterday, I was on Instagram and watching IG Stories. One person I follow said boredom is necessary for creatives. They/we need it to make room for the new ideas that fuel our creative work.
I am working on a post about that, but I want to know what you think. Do you agree? Please leave me a comment about why or why not.
I’ve been working on “the planner for creatives” for a while. It has elements that I want in a planner – a submissions log, project planning pages, a master project list, and a content idea log.

Sometimes plans change and drive us nuts. Other times, they change and we know it will be so much for the better.
This is one of those times. The better one, that is. Though I have no doubt it will drive me nuts sometimes, too. (That’s easy to do when you’re already more than halfway there.)
A few weeks ago, I had applied for a job I really wanted. Then I went to Eureka Springs for two weeks. I thought I’d get the call for an interview while I was gone. Instead, the call came two days after I got back.
I went to the interview and it went great. To fast forward a little bit, I didn’t get the full-time job I wanted. Instead, I got offered a long-term contract position.
That will actually work out for the better. And it will also allow me to pursue other ideas and personal projects I thought of while I was in Eureka Springs.
Yes, plans changed, but so much for the better. I’m excited about the possibilities. I’ll keep you posted on how this all goes.
