It feels a little awkward to talk about something as frivolous as self-expression with the things that are going on in the world right now. However, I decided that, awkward or not, it’s important because it’s a part of self-care, so it should be addressed.
Part of my goal — no, my primary goal — in what I do is to help you express your creativity. Here are some ways crochet can help you with your creative expression.
Contents
1. Wardrobe
If you are one of the makers who can crochet garments, including sweaters and skirts, you have a perfectly unique form of creative self-expression literally at your fingertips.
2. Accessories
If you don’t want to wear a full crocheted garment, perhaps accessories are more your style. Scarves, shawls, hats, headbands, and jewelry are just a few ways you can show your creativity in the things you wear.
3. Home decor
Lately, I have been seeing patterns for wall hangings and pillows. I’ve never thought of making a crocheted wall hanging myself, but some of these patterns have me wanting to do it. Other home decor items include placemats, table runners, tablecloths, buntings, and so on.
4. Crocheting
Then, of course, you can crochet things yourself as a way to express your creativity. Patterns are available for free and for a fee in a variety of places. Two of my favorites are Facebook groups and Ravelry.

5. Designing
If you don’t like to follow patterns, maybe you like to design your own things. Im learning how to design crochet patterns. It’s a challenge, but it’s one I am definitely enjoying. It incorporates many of the previous forms of creative self-expression through crochet as well.
The main thing is there’s no way to do it wrong. If you prefer to purchase and wear your creative side, that’s wonderful! If you prefer to use someone else’s patterns and make your own things to use and wear, that’s wonderful too! And if you want to do it all from scratch and design your own things, well, you know what I’m going to say.
That’s wonderful too!
There’s no wrong way to enjoy your crochet and express your creativity as long as you enjoy it and it works for you.
